The artless art

Today I searched for oil paintings on Etsy shops and I found many paintings to be over- rated and hence overpriced. Such form should not be encouraged and it is important to judge the fineness in one’s art piece and for that one needs to understand what fine art actually represents. There is a lot of misconception in understanding art and I will talk about them in this post.

Firstly, I believe that amateur artists take the responsibility of being an artist lightly. Art is so powerful in conveying thoughts that we find it difficult to express in reality. It is so effective that philosopher Immanuel Kant in his book ‘Critique of Judgement’ thinks we need art to get benefited from vivid illustrations and memorable symbols of good behaviour that can be communicated through art to keep the wayward parts of ourselves in check.

Good art works on the concept of ‘Selective Attentiveness’ by effectively tuning out the rest. It is important to understand that a fine art is not about the technical skill involved in creating it, and is the thought it tries to convey. Art is a natural extension of philosophy and is a powerful communicative instrument which at its fullest capacity makes us attentive and it helps us re-engage reality. Consciousness, as defined by William James, is continuously moving, shifting and unbroken stream and a fine art should keep hold of one’s attention and is important in human consciousness which is the awareness of yourself.

According to me, beauty is wrongly associated with art and is something we confuse with quite often. It is a mechanism that is intended to make us more attentive. Beauty is the property of an object the art represents and such objects appear to be purposive without purpose because we humans are designed to experience and judge beauty based on aesthetics and a fine art need not look beautiful because everything that is beautiful need not necessarily be meaningful.

I also think that art should not be judged by its true-to-life quality. Work of an artist is to hardwire emotions or thoughts into their creation and is not about presenting the visual qualities of the subject and that’s why I believe that anything that feels realistic need not be artistic. To conclude, I would say art is something that cannot be sold in exchange for a material. Selling an art is selling an emotion. Impurities in art don’t contribute it’s the function of evoking emotions in an observer and a fine art should be free of such impurities.
